Finally, this study highlights that deception occurs in the mainstream news media, not just on the fringes of the Internet. We do not know what proportion of fake news comes from different sources. It seems that fake news originating from outside the mainstream news media has increased dramatically over the past decade, due at least in part to the rise of digital communication and social media. But this should not be taken as evidence that the production of mainstream fake news has decreased, much less disappeared. In fact, it may well have increased, given growing demand for news and growing access to information online, which was already the basis for much of Blair's fake news two decades ago. Furthermore, societal concern over fake news originating from the periphery of the news media presumably makes it even easier for fake news to go undetected at its core. Coverage of the online fake news crisis by the mainstream media could even be used to divert attention from more institutionalised forms of disinformation. The framework we propose is also of direct value to the detailed discursive analysis of individual cases of fake news of sufficient importance to warrant close attention. For example, in a legal context, empirical analysis presented as evidence in court is often required to be based on accepted scientific theory (Reference AllenAllen 1993). Until now, however, there has been no clear explanation for why the linguistic structure of real and fake news should be expected to differ systematically. Our framework also potentially provides a basis for extending discourse analytic methods for deception detection more generally in forensic linguistics, which is relevant across a wide range of areas, including for police interviews (Reference PicornellPicornell 2013). In addition, our framework can be of value for supporting work in investigative linguistics, which is an emerging field of applied linguistics that focuses on the application of methods for the study of language use to make sense of real-world issues currently in the news (Reference Grieve, Woodfield, Coulthard, May and Sousa-SilvaGrieve & Woodfield 2020).
Officials are investigating disturbing Amazon product reviews that could be linked to suspected killer Todd Kohlhepp, who was arrested last week after a woman was discovered chained up inside a metal container in South Carolina. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright speculated last week that Kohlhepp could have been behind the mysterious Facebook messages.

Review timestamp is another neat trick to identify fake reviews from genuine ones. Sellers usually buy fake reviews in bulk, and such service providers leave comments in quick succession. If a product has only occasional reviews, and then a glut of positive ones come in all at once, you should be skeptical. You can use the most recent filter in Amazon's review section and check for highly positive or negative reviews posted over a short period. How to spot fake reviews on Amazon
